TJ Schmaltz

Biography

As Chief People and Legal Officer, TJ has executive oversight for the organization’s employee experience, internal and corporate communications, governance and corporate support as well as legal affairs. TJ started his career as a labour and employment lawyer, and transitioned into the human resources and people experience field, where he has worked in progressively more senior roles since the early 2000s. Prior to joining the credit union in June 2017, TJ was Chief Human Resources Officer for a rapidly growing organization of more than 10,000 employees in nearly 200 cities across North America. This experience included significant merger, acquisition and integration work.

A passionate advocate for people-focused human resource management, TJ is a part-time instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology where he has been teaching since 2005. In 2020, TJ co-published a textbook on employment law for business and HR professionals that is used by students across Canada and is currently working on a new edition.

TJ is an active board member with a number of organizations and trade associations and has earned his Institute of Corporate Director designation (ICD.D). He is the Past Chair of the Board for the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources Canada and the Past Chair for the North American Human Resources Association, representing over 660,000 HR professionals in Canada, the United States and Mexico. He is also a Board member and Committee Chair with the Credit Union Pension and Benefits Trust.

TJ is designated as a Chartered Professional in Human Resources as well as a Senior Certified Professional with the US Society for Human Resource Management. He also holds a Bachelor of Common Law (J.D.) and a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from McGill University, and a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of Ottawa. In 2018, TJ was granted the honorary title of Fellow Chartered Professional in Human Resources by CPHR Canada.
