Giving back to our communities
Community involvement, community investment, and being a good corporate citizen are a top priority at Prospera Credit Union. We care about our communities and we wouldn’t think that we’re successful unless we made a meaningful difference in those communities.
There are a number of different ways that we do this. One way is by working with a variety of charitable and community partners to build strong vibrant communities. Partners like BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, our employee charity of choice, for whom we do continuous fundraising throughout the year with events like Bats for a Cause. This one event (a softball tournament co-founded by one of our own employees) has raised over $300,000 for BC’s children.
Our partnerships are more than a financial investment, however. It’s important to us to be active in our communities; that’s why we also contribute volunteer efforts to support the initiatives we get involved with. For example, Prospera has partnered with Junior Achievement to present Economics for Success, aimed at helping young Canadians discover and develop leadership, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and workforce readiness skills. Partnerships such as these provide us with the opportunity to leverage our expertise and help others in our communities. Throughout the year, volunteers from Prospera present this program to grade nine and ten students in our local communities. But volunteer opportunities extend beyond our identity as a financial institution, and starting in 2013, Prospera partnered with the United Way Day of Caring program to offer employees the opportunity to get involved in their local communities through a number of volunteer activities. In 2016, during National Volunteer Week, Prospera employees from the Okanagan to Vancouver contributed 1,544 volunteer hours at local food banks, transition homes, community service centres and animal care facilities—that’s equivalent to 182 days of work.
Another way we help our charitable partners is by using our resources and network to create awareness within the community by inviting them to participate in events such as our free movie nights, annual skate party and branch hosted events including our member appreciation barbecues. Funds raised at many of these activities go directly to the community partners to support their valuable programs and services. In addition, as title sponsor of two big cycling events in BC (the Prospera Valley GranFondo and the Prospera Granfondo Axel Merckx Okanagan), we are thrilled to be able to support worthwhile projects like Cycling BC’s iRide school program and the Axel Merckx Youth Development Foundation.
Why do we do all of this you might wonder? It’s simple really. At Prospera, we want to ensure that we consistently do the right thing for our members, our communities and our business. We invest our time and money back into the communities where our members are because we believe it isn’t what we say that makes a difference in the world, it’s what we do.
