August 27

ABBOTSFORD, BC, AUGUST 27, 2018: On July 28 and 29 the 10th Annual Bats for a Cause slo-pitch tournament was held in Kelowna, BC. The competition was as hot as the weather as 28 teams battled it out and raised money for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Celebrating its 10-year anniversary, the tournament is presented by title sponsor Prospera Credit Union. It was an incredible weekend with every previous record being smashed – a record number of teams participated, a record amount of money was raised by an individual and the total dollars raised was $141,237.29 which is the highest amount ever. This brings the cumulative, 10-year fundraising total to $638,237.00! Contributing to the record setting weekend were 28 registered teams and over 600 participants.

“What an awesome weekend full of community support for our 10th anniversary of Bats for a Cause,” said Angela Burnell, co-founder of the tournament and Prospera’s Regional Director for the Okanagan. “Together with our sponsors, volunteers and teams we smashed all fundraising expectations with all proceeds going to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. This tournament has truly become a community staple event that has been embraced by all who enjoy having fun playing ball and warming their hearts doing good for the children of BC.”

Once again, Prospera had three teams of its own competing in the tournament: The Inglorious Batters, Prospera Bears and the Prospera Dodgers who together raised a total of $33,006. The Inglorious Batters raised the most and won the trophy for “Most Funds Raised” with $18,005. The desire to give back is what makes this event such a resounding success and we’re looking forward to next year already!

“As the outgoing Chair of Miracle Weekend for the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and a part of Prospera Credit Union, I am very proud of our Prospera teams for their contributions in both fundraising and participating in the Bats for a Cause Weekend,” said Dan Whalley, Vice President Family Banking & Wealth Management. “A special congratulations’ to Angela Burnell and all of the volunteers involved with making this tournament such a success. It is truly amazing what they accomplished in order to make a difference in the lives of so many families and children who use the services of the BC Children’s Hospital.”
